Fatback Brass Band has now grown into a healthy
four-year-old project. Like in any ambitious music endeavour, there are
calendar years and Led Zep years. This band from Ghent, Belgium chose
something in between that, as they took a one-year break from killing it at
festival stages and tearing a new hole into corporate parties who had them
mistaken with an actual brass band.
Hilarious and charming misconceptions such as these will no
longer be part of Fatback's history. Releasing their debut EP in one of Ghent's
best venues in March 2014, the collective took a definitive step towards the
next level. Great inspirations from across the Atlantic have proved how
powerful brass hip hop can be, but Fatback Brass Band isn't just an original
concept inside Belgium. Expect a lot of love for the hip hop greats, as well as
subtle and often complex compositions, which give any poppy rendition of the
genre a run for its money.
A lot of work and dedication went into an EP which will show
this band's true potential. It will sound “surprising”, as MC AftaWRDS and
saxophonist Michiel Joos put it. Not only is Fatback Brass Band a true hip hop
act in the first place, it is also a collection of ten excellent musicians who
can't seem to stick to their lines whenever playing live.
Which is a blessing. If ever there's a band you need to
discover on a stage, it's this one. Let this new EP be your warm-up to the
concert you'll inevitably go to after listening to the five-track record.
